Capturing the Journey: The Midway Line
This Christmas, my husband wanted to create a truly unforgettable gift for his sister and her husband—something that would capture the essence of their love in the anticipation of welcoming their first child, who will also be his family’s very first niece and granddaughter. After much thought, he decided to commission a custom portrait, believing that art has a unique power to celebrate moments that words sometimes cannot fully express.
The process began with a careful selection of photos that showcased their warm connection. We sneakily found out her favorite photo from their announcement shoot, and then sat down together - along with my Mother-in-Law to work out the elements that would truly represent the things they love and share.
We discussed color schemes that evoked both the magic of their love and the gentle hope of parenthood. I was encouraged to include personal touches and traditions—a favorite sports team, a cherished song, or backgrounds inspired by scenes from one of America's most beautiful States. These details, woven together thoughtfully, helped make the portrait uniquely their own and ensured every aspect was meaningful.
As the piece took shape, we considered how to reflect their personalities and the narrative of this new chapter in their lives. At every stage, communication was open and creative, with feedback shaping the artwork in unexpected and beautiful ways. The portrait became more than a likeness; it became a celebration of shared memories, laughter, and dreams for the future.
When my sister-in-law and her husband received the finished portrait, their reactions were deeply moving. The joy and emotion they expressed made it clear that this wasn’t just a holiday gift—it was a keepsake that marked the beginning of their family’s next chapter. For all of us, especially with the arrival of our first niece and granddaughter on the horizon, the artwork serves as a lasting reminder of how cherished she already is and how much love surrounds her.
Reflecting on the experience, I’m grateful for the opportunity my husband had given me to honor his sister in such a heartfelt way. Commissioning this portrait allowed him to celebrate not only their love but also the hope, connection, and excitement that come with welcoming a little one. It’s a testament to the power of art and family, and one that will continue to hold meaning as our family grows and new memories are made.

Images That Sparked Creativity
Behind the Paintbrush: The Making of The Midway Line
Initial Sketch
This portrait was truly a labor of love. It was restarted at least 3 times before I was happy enough for my Husband to proof the sketch and I think it took me a grand total of 4 days to be happy before I started coloring it in!
First Steps
For this portrait, I actually bought some blending pencils - Something I've never used before - because I didn't want to risk lightening the sky or changing the colors in any way.
Shading the Skin
I made the choice to break away from my usual technique of working from the top down with this, because I wanted to make sure the skin tones were consistent across visible limbs for both subjects.
The Fabric
Starting with the lighter shades of each article of clothing, I slowly increased the shadows where they needed to fall and used my trusted white pencil, alone with some pale blues, to create the depth and 3D effect of the fabric.
Then I got to do something I never thought I would have to - draw Ben&Jerry's Icecream! I'm going to say - it was definitely easier than I thought it was going to be...
Adding the Details
We decided to keep them in the more natural tones, as to not take away from the main focus of this drawing - the happy couple! It was important that we were able to include one Bear for each of them, giving them all the strength, wisdom and healing they need as they start this wonderful journey.
The Final Part
For this portrait, I wanted to include something special for them. Knowing that my Sister-in-law can also read sheet music, I included a line from their favorite song. Leave a comment below if you think you know what the song is!
